Imam stirs confusion over Park51’s future

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, co-founder of the Park51 Islamic center, slated to be built in the Financial District, has raised eyebrows after suggesting that he may move the controversial project to another location, if he finds a suitable spot, according to the New York Times. Park51 has drawn ire from some, who claim that its planned spot a few blocks from ground zero is inappropriate. However, developer Sharif El-Gamal has held his ground, refusing to reconsider the center’s location at 51 Park Place. Rauf’s statements have led to confusion over who is in charge of the $100 million project, after he and Gamal formally severed their partnership Jan. 14. Gamal, for his part, said Rauf’s stance on Park51’s location does not reflect his plans. “As we have been stating for over a year now, Park51 is not moving its location under and circumstances,” Gamal said. “[Rauf] has not authority or control over this project.” [NYT]
