Pathmark to close in Sheepshead Bay

A&P, the bankrupt grocery company that owns Pathmark, said that the supermarket will close because it’s one of the company’s worst-performing stores. However, workers said store managers assured them as recently as a few weeks ago that the store was in good shape despite the company’s financial problems. The store employs 100 people, according to a United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 spokesperson, who added that the union is looking for other jobs for the workers. Customers said the shutdown would hurt them financially, since other nearby supermarkets are more expensive. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz pledged to work with the landlord to find another supermarket to move in. “The loss of a supermarket in Brooklyn, particularly when so many of our neighborhoods are lacking quality food at affordable prices, is not only a major quality of life issue but a public health issue,” he said. Though A&P will close 31 other stores in eight states if a judge approves it, the Sheepshead Bay Pathmark is the only store in the five boroughs that will be shuttered. [NYDN]
