Shelly’s restaurant on West 57th shutters
Shelly’s, a longtime Midtown restaurant fixture most recently located at 41 West 57th Street, has
closed.
The restaurant, which was owned by Shelly Fireman, whose Fireman Hospitality Group has six
other Manhattan eateries, shuttered April 4, according to Fireman spokesperson Sally Fischer.
She denied the closing was due to any rent dispute with landlord Kamran Hakim and said it was
to allow Fireman to focus on opening new restaurants and reinventing existing ones, like Redeye
Grill, at 890 Seventh Avenue, which was rebranded as Redeye last week. A spokesperson for
Hakim said he would not comment on tenants.
“It was a decision that people make when people weigh the opportunities, and there weren’t
many good opportunities there,” she said.
Called Shelly’s Trattoria when it opened in the late 1990s, the restaurant, which was popular
with the pre-theater crowd, was originally located at 104 West 57th Street. But that building,
which once contained a Horn & Hardart Automat, was demolished in 2006 to make way for a
new tower that’s now occupied by the Hilton Club.
In December, Fireman had revamped the menu at Shelly’s and renamed it Shelly’s Big City.
Sinvin Real Estate now has the listing for 41 West 57th Street, which offers 7,200 square feet across three
levels, according to marketing materials; it can accommodate 178 seats and has 25 feet of
frontage and sidewalk seating. But broker Steve Rappaport at Sinvin, who is personally
marketing the property, said he could not comment further on the listing.
