Trailer park artists’ group evicted in W’burg

A group of 20 Williamsburg artists have been ordered to vacate the Meserole Street warehouse that’s served as their mobile home community for more than a year. According to the Brooklyn Paper, the tenants have been shacking up there in trailers and calling themselves the Bushwick Project for the Arts, but building inspectors, who yesterday discovered illegal wiring and a woodworking shop in the basement, now say they must move or else risk arrest. “The way to resolve it is to remove the trailers,” said Ryan Fitzgibbon, a spokesperson for the Department of Buildings. “The backyard is a violation of zoning, and the first floor is illegal use because it’s supposed to be a factory.” The tenants have a five-year lease on the space and say past inspections have found the building to be safe.
