Birthplace of hip-hop facing foreclosure
A home considered the birthplace of hip-hop is facing a foreclosure
auction in November, Curbed reported. The home, at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue was the location of D.J. Kool Herc’s hip-hop parties in the early 1970s and it has already been in trouble for a number of years.
Two years ago, the then-new owners took the building out of the
Mitchell-Lama program, forced tenants out and raised rents, but then
didn’t have enough funds to complete the process. During that same
time, the number of violations spiked to 598 from 82 . Now the
owners are having trouble paying their mortgage, which has a lien amount of $7.38 million. The auction is scheduled for Nov. 7. [Curbed]
