Downtown Brooklyn not ready for population rise

Within two square miles in Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene, 7,362 new residential units are slated for construction, a columnist for the Brooklyn Eagle said, meaning the neighborhood may be set for an invasion of between 15,000 and 20,000 new residents.

New developments include the Hub, a 52-story residential rental tower to be built at 333 Schermerhorn Street by the Steiner Brothers. The developer plans to break ground on the project early next year.

But the area may not be prepared for such an explosion of newcomers, Eagle columnist Dennis Holt noted; it has narrow sidewalks and streets and insufficient infrastructure in terms of telephone lines, gas mains and water mains. The surrounding schools may also not be able to support the number of children moving into the neighborhood.

“There is an obvious conclusion,” Holt said. “A heck of a lot more needs to be done than to just build 50-story buildings.” [Brooklyn Eagle]
