Barclays Center traffic concerns thwart developer’s construction plans

Will car-driving Brooklynites be scared off by a Prospect Heights rental that lacks parking?

According to the Brooklyn Paper, that issue is at the heart of a fight between the developer of a 55-unit complex across the street from the Barclays Center and the surrounding community.

City regulations require developer Martin Domansky to build about two dozen parking spaces for the $20 million, five-story luxury rental he’s planning at 215 Flatbush Avenue, the site of the old Bergen Tile factory. But Domansky said the lot isn’t large enough to accomodate both parking and the structure he is building and he’s filed for a variance. Though the community is already concerned with traffic in the area as a result of the forthcoming arena, Domansky said car owners would be discouraged from renting in a building without a lot.

But community activists say renters would just look for parking on the street, exacerbating the congestion that’s sure to come with the 19,000-seat arena. “Parking is going to be important once the arena opens,” said local Council member Letitia James. “I would hope that he reconsiders his position.” [Brooklyn Paper]
