Williamsburg factory to become music venue

Another former warehouse in Williamsburg is being reimagined, but for a decidedly different use that the typical luxury apartment conversion. The New York Observer reported that a non-profit music venue with a recording studio, restaurant and bar will open at the former sawdust factory at 80 North 6th Street.

The project, called Original Music Workshop, was conceived of by former tax attorney Kevin Dolan, who beat out two bidders and purchased the 12,200-square-foot factory for $2.33 million in 2009, after a lengthy search for a property. The building had sat vacant for at least a decade, the Observer said, and it was most recently used as a production facility for the colored pebbles that fill fish tanks.

All told, the project will cost $15 million. It includes a movable stage that can accommodate as many as 12 performers, with seating for 120 to 180 guests and an additional 200 standing. The 24-hours a day, 7-days a week space will also accomodate rehearsals and recordings, with room for up to 70 musicians in a record session.

Dolan also plans a restaurant and bar for the building’s second floor. [NYO]
