Lighthouse museum seeks Staten Island home

Proponents of a National Lighthouse Museum, proposed for the St. George ferry terminal on Staten Island, are fundraising with the hope of opening doors in May 2013, the Wall Street Journal reported. For now, the group behind the museum says that it needs to raise $1 million to pilot operations and to cover expenses for the first year.

Eventually, lighthouse enthusiasts hope to take over the entire 10-acre city site, which would require approximately $15 million in funds for renovation. So far $180,000 has been raised, though the museum hopes to receive grants from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

“Our plans are for documentaries on the history of lighthouses and their keepers, computer kiosks for visiting lighthouses throughout the country and developing a web-cam program nationwide, beaming from different lighthouses to our museum,” the museum’s executive director, Linda Dianto, told the Journal.
