Some residents of Edgemere, Queens, fear that a planned hotel in their neighborhood will derail recent efforts to revitalize the area, the New York Daily News reported.
Local residents plan to rally today at the proposed hotel site, at Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 44th Street, the News said. The owner of the property, Amritpal Sandhu, told the News that the hotel will be part of the La Quinta chain, and that it will simply offer a more affordable alternative to Manhattan.
Neighbors worry that the hotel will attract unsavory elements, even though Sandhu has said that it would not.
“We bought a home here five years ago because we saw an opportunity and the neighborhood was changing,” Kathy Sofronis, an Edgemere resident, told the News. “But this [planned hotel] has everyone scared.” [NYDN]
