Developer Arun Bhatia intends to build a 43-room dormitory where last year he demolished a historic townhouse, according to Department of Buildings filings cited by EV Grieve. The plans call for a nine-story, 35,000-square-foot structure with a ground-floor retail space at 35 Cooper Square, on the corner of East 6th Street.

However, there is no word yet on who the dorm would serve. EV Grieve speculated either NYU or Cooper Union.

Bhatia purchased the property, which was a three-story site rowhouse built in 1825, for $8.5 million in late 2010. As previously reported, Bhatia’s decision to demolish the property sparked some controversy in the neighborhood, leading the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors to spearhead an anti-destruction campaign. However, as previously reported, Bhatia did make an effort to work with neighborhood preservationists. [EV Grieve] — Zachary Kussin
