A construction worker died today when a portion of an under-construction building collapsed on him and a co-worker at a construction site in Fort Greene, the New York Times reported.

The 67-year-old man and his colleague reportedly fell 30 feet when the roof collapsed at an apartment building at 227 Carlton Avenue. The accident occurred just after 9 a.m. The man’s colleague was seriously injured in the incident and has been taken to Kings County Hospital. Neither man’s name was released to the press. Three other men who were working at the site were uninjured.

“It appears the support beams gave way and two workers fell,” said Tony Sclafani, a spokesperson for the Department of Buildings.

Scalafani said there were no open complaints or violations filed against the project, but neighbors told the Times that they had noticed structural damage to their own properties since construction began. [NYTimes]Katherine Clarke
