Rabbi Pinto’s wife attempts suicide as investigation into bribery charges moves forward

The wife of the Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto — the so-called rabbi to the real estate stars, who is being investigated for bribery — attempted suicide yesterday. Dvora Pinto was found to have taken an overdose of pills and was rushed to an Israeli hospital, according to the Jerusalem Post. She is listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Israeli police believe that the influential rabbi, who has strong ties to New York’s real estate community, attempted to bribe law enforcement. Rabbi Pinto allegedly offered up the equivalent of about $52,000 in Israeli shekels for information about an investigation into his charity, according to Haaretz.

The Pintos were questioned last week, and placed under house arrest. Dvora Pinto had been scheduled to speak with investigators shortly after she was found to have overdosed. Police are allowing Rabbi Pinto to visit his wife at the hospital. —TRD [Haaretz] [JPost]
