Residents of Union Square are IHOPping mad over the smells and noise created by the pancakes chain, the New York Post reported. IHOP opened on 14th Street about a year ago.

“The one thing I always loved about my apartment was it was so quiet and peaceful, and we’ll never have that again,” 86-year-old Rena Begleiter told the Post. “The irony of it is I happen to have lost hearing in one ear. I’m turning a deaf ear, but there’s still that grinding noise.”

A petition from residents of her building, on 15th Street, objecting to the noise and the “bacon smell,” was sent to the Department of Buildings.

“They’re going to have to relocate the equipment,” a spokeswoman for the DOB told the Post, referring to a new air vent intended to remedy the intrusive smells, which, because of the noise it generates, has only made things worse, according to locals. “If they fail to do so, we’ll revoke their permit.” [Post] — Guelda Voien
