2 Gold residents say they were robbed during Sandy

Expensive watches, bags and an irreplaceable baseball collection stolen from inhabitants

Updated at 5:50 p.m. December 10 with comment from TF Cornerstone Residents of 2 Gold Street are furious after a number of thefts following Hurricane Sandy, the New York Post reported. The building, which was hit hard by the storm, allowed workers into residents’ apartments when the building was deemed uninhabitable, the Post said. Now, a number of renters in the 839-unit tower are missing followable items such as jewelry, cash and a baseball collection “autographed by the best Yankees still living,” according to residents.

TF Cornerstone, which manages the building, assured customers on its website during the storm that security was a top priority. But residents are unhappy with the company’s response to the thefts.

“They were telling me to calm down, but it just seems like they are covering up some missteps, especially when it comes to people like me,” said entrepreneur Chris Mirabile, whose baseballs were lifted.

Model Kamila Saydullaeva said two Louis Vuitton of hers bags were stolen; William Scholander, executive director of a Wall Street securities brokerage firm, said $8,000 in cash and eight watches of his were stolen.

“We are handling these reports with the utmost seriousness and are cooperating fully in every respect with both law enforcement and our tenants,” a spokesperson for TF Cornerstone said in a statement to The Real Deal.  In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, it was essential for the safety, health, and security of all our tenants that each unit in the building be evaluated by building personnel.  It was an absolute necessity that we check each individual unit to ensure that all windows were closed and secured, that perishable items had been removed from refrigeration units and that all gas stoves had been properly turned off. These unit checks were at all times conducted in an orderly fashion, closely supervised and well documented.”
