Badly damaged Red Hook rec center reopens

The Red Hook Recreation Center in Brooklyn’s storm-battered Red Hook neighborhood, has reopened nearly two months after Hurricane Sandy made landfall, NY1 reported. The surge filled the property’s basement with water, ushering in two months of repairs to get the building, located at 155 Bay Street, back on its feet.

As previously reported, the research of a Red Hook-based cartographer, Jim McMahon, found that almost 95 percent of Red Hook’s streets were submerged during the storm. He has called on the city to mark surge-prone areas. Elevation signs would allow residents to determine which areas can be evacuated before a storm comes and alert potential newcomers to the risks of flooding.

The recreation center previously operated as a bathhouse and was built in 1939.
