Executives at Trinity Church in the Financial District are considering building a 25-story residential tower above its ministry offices, DNAinfo reported.

The church’s vestry will decide later this month whether to replace the 90-year-old buildings at 68-74 Trinity Place or move ahead with a $35 million project to gut, renovate and upgrade them, a Trinity spokeswoman told DNAinfo.

The two proposed designs by architecture firms Cook Fox and Pelli Clarke Pelli would include a six- or seven-story base reserved for the ministry, topped by the tower.

The parish – one of the city’s wealthiest – is a major property owner in the Hudson Square area, with about 6 million square feet of holdings. The plan for a major overhaul of the buildings has split the church, with some arguing that the money should be channeled toward helping the needy.

The Trinity spokeswoman told DNAinfo that future revenue from the residential tower would offset the cost of building the ministry’s new facility. [DNAinfo]Hiten Samtani
