New York University’s Schack Institute of Real Estate will offer a 128-credit Bachelor of Science degree in real estate starting this fall, the school announced.
New York state requires only a 75-hour course to become a licensed real estate agent; however, influential industry insiders have been pushing for more educational credentials to join the profession.
The NYU program will be a mix of liberal arts classes and a “broad array of professionally focused courses,” internships and industry events, according to Rosemary Scanlon, the institute’s divisional dean. The aim is to prepare students for managing industry change in an urban landscape.
Faculty will teach real estate finance, law, market analysis and leasing. Students also will focus on key aspects of the real estate development process, risk and portfolio management, and how sustainability is affecting the industry.
“An undergraduate degree in real estate provides competitive advantage in a marketplace that is ripe with opportunity,” Scanlon said.
NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate was founded in 1967 and has 800 full and part-time students as well as 4,200 working professionals enrolled in professional certificate programs, noncredit courses and licensure-related offerings. — Julie Strickland
