New York University’s Schack Institute of Real Estate will offer a 128-credit Bachelor of Science degree in real estate starting this fall, the school announced.

New York state requires only a 75-hour course to become a licensed real estate agent; however, influential  industry insiders have been pushing for more educational credentials to join the profession.

The NYU program will be a mix of liberal arts classes and a “broad array of professionally focused courses,” internships and industry events, according to Rosemary Scanlon, the institute’s divisional dean. The aim is to prepare students for managing  industry change in an urban landscape.

Faculty will teach real estate finance, law, market analysis and leasing. Students also will  focus on key aspects of the real estate development process, risk and portfolio management, and how sustainability is affecting the industry.

“An undergraduate degree in real estate provides competitive advantage in a marketplace that is ripe with opportunity,” Scanlon said.

NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate was founded in 1967 and has 800 full and part-time students as well as 4,200 working professionals enrolled in professional certificate programs, noncredit courses and licensure-related offerings. — Julie Strickland

You would think that this would have been available 15 years ago

You are right Frank. This program is over 60 years old with Larry Silverstein being a major catalyst. Oldest Real Estate program in America.

  • Remember?

Haven’t they always offered this? Even back with it was the “School of continuing and professional studies”?

Great to see the school is expanding its potential student base. The Masters program is on one of the best in the field. Mostly all professors and students have concentrated background and hold key positions in some of the top development/ leasing/ finance/ law firms… Great source for networking and learning!

NYU is very well poised to be *THE preeminent real estate program* for the Nation. Kudos to the admin for finally making it part of the school’s BA academic infrastructure. These very lucky students will have an out-of-the-gate degree that can be monetized immediately and at high levels (just google NYU Real Estate Finance and Linkedin to see all the top-brass execs in the City’s development, acquisitions, private equity firms who hold the degree at Master’s level) to justify NYU’s wallet-boggling $5,200 per class fees (most expensive in the nation!).

This would be a degree that would pay from day one as opposed to some of the other loosey-goosed offerings like communications. Those kids will cleans up of they play their cards right (make use of Nyu’s externships with its insider connections).
