A nine-story residential building topped by a penthouse is set to emerge on a long-dormant site at East Eighth Street at Avenue D in the East Village, EV Grieve reported.

Queens-based architect Akeeb Shekoni will design 401 East 8th Street, a lot owned by an entity described only as 399 E8 Development LLC in city records. The current owner purchased the site, which has 67 feet of frontage on East 8th Street, in 2012, for $4.5 million. The site was listed for $5.2 million in July 2011.

It was not immediately clear whether the residential units will be rentals or condominiums.

Various plans for the site have come and gone over the years, EV Grieve said, including a 2006 plan for hotelier Sam Chang to build six-stories of condominiums, which was approved by the city but later abandoned. [EV Grieve]Julie Strickland
