Bialystoker Nursing Home inches closer to landmark status

The battle to secure landmark status for the Bialystoker Nursing Home on the Lower East Side is drawing ever closer to a resolution, the Lo-Down reported.

The neighborhood fixture at 228 East Broadway is but one full City Council vote away from the proposal being granted.

The building, not to be confused with the 15-17 Bialystoker Place retirement home which sold for $28 million to an undisclosed party in January, has long been the subject of a campaign for the structure’s landmark designation. Led by the preservation group Friends of the Lower East Side, the battle gained momentum which the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to approve the building’s status on May 21.

What becomes of the 1931 Art Deco building after securing landmark status remains to be seen. Bialystoker was shuttered in August 2011, at which point fear abounded that the building would be converted to a luxury apartment complex. [Lo-Down] — Julie Strickland
