Sandy-damaged businesses get extra $1M for building repairs

Up to $20,000 in aid for businesses still suffering from Hurricane Sandy storm damage is on the way.

The city’s Small Business Storefront Improvement Program, an extension of a pilot program launched in May On Beach 116th Street in the Rockaways, has up to $1 million dedicated to renovations and says it will be able to aid around 50 businesses.

“The Small Business Storefront Improvement Program is one more way the city is helping small businesses and commercial corridors come back even stronger after Hurricane Sandy,” Rob Walsh, the city Department of Small Business Services’ commissioner, said in a press statement.

The program, funded by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, will target Red Hook and the Brooklyn/Queens waterfront, the east and south shore of Staten Island, the South Street Seaport area in Manhattan, Brighton Beach, Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay, with a focus on repairs to exterior damage. The pilot program, which awarded over $300,000 to 19 businesses, helped with new signage and awnings, display windows, lighting, painting and door repair. [Crain’s] — Julie Strickland
