Boston Properties’ Mort Zuckerman has steered the real estate investment trust from strength to strength — the same, though, can’t be said about his driving. The mogul rammed his Lexus right into a single mother’s parked 2009 Ford Fusion last month in the Hamptons, and she’s still battling with his insurance company to pay up.

“It’s the principal of the thing,” Charlene Peele told the New York Post of the accident on East Hampton Village’s Main Street . “He hit me, but I’m the one running around like a crazy person, trying to sort out a mess I wasn’t even involved in. I’m the one left without a car.”

Zuckerman, who yesterday announced Boston Properties’ sale of its $684 million stake in Times Square Tower, did not respond to the Post’s requests for comment. The accident happened when he “looked away from the roadway,” veered right and careened right into Peele’s car, according to a police report seen by the newspaper. His insurance company has notified Peele that she would receive the book value of her car — a little more than $13,000, an amount that she maintains won’t even cover what she still owes on her auto loan.

Zuckerman didn’t receive a citation, the report shows, though leaving the scene of a traffic accident is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 15 days in jail. The billionaire told cops that he left a note before heading to his mansion on Main Beach. [NYP]  – Hiten Samtani

Jeez — and NYC/Hamptons billionaires wonder why they are so despised. Mort, for all the unnecessary hoops you’ve put this woman through, how about you let your insurer write her the check for the $13K, while you buy her a replacement vehicle outright.

Thought he was supposed to do the right thing? NOT
GOOD MORT. How much money do you have?
You ruined this person’s car! TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!

I could see sideswiping a parked car and scratching it up. But to total a parked car is an extraordinary accident. Did he aim directly at it, like a missile strike?

These people don’t take responsibility. See 2008 Financial Crisis.
