Gowanus sees manufacturing boom

Number of new businesses in area jumps 44% since 2000

Brooklyn’s Gowanus area is experiencing a manufacturing craze, with modern wholesalers setting up shop side-by-side with artisanal craftsmen in a neighborhood formerly best known for its smelly canal, a new city report shows.

Though the percentage of industrial firms in the area has stayed relatively constant over the past few decades, at 12 percent of the local workforce, the number of new businesses is up 44 percent since 2000, according to a report by the city’s Economic Development Corp seen by the New York Daily News.

Many of these new businesses are started by young entrepreneurs and tech geeks – a crowd more typically associated with Dumbo and Midtown South, the data show.

“New businesses are saying this is the cool place to be,” Paul Basile, president of the Gowanus Alliance, a group that represents 60 companies in the area, told the Daily News.

The growth has led to a sharp spike in the area’s median income – from $45,000 in 1999 to $99,000 currently, according to the newspaper.
