La Guardia Airport is set to receive $37.5 million in federal and state aid for storm-resiliency measures, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday.

The money will go toward projects that should minimize the damage from future storms like Hurricane Sandy, Cuomo said yesterday, according to a report from the New York Daily News. The planned renovations include installing flood barrier berms, concrete flood walls and updating the airport’s power distribution grid.

About $28 million will be covered by federal aid money awarded to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Cuomo added.

The Port Authority has also been looking to replace the aging Central Terminal Building at the airport by 2021, a project that is slated to cost $2.4 billion. [NYDN]Hiten Samtani
