WEEKENDEDITION From leaks to rats, the New York City Housing Authority has vowed to make repairs in 150 apartments in Brownsville, Canarsie and East New York before Christmas.

NYCHA Executive Vice President for Operations Carlos Laboy-Diaz made the promise during a November 18th meeting with some 450 tenants angry over years of ignored repair requests.

“The language was for Christmas, and it will be a wonderful and well-deserved gift,” Rev. David Brawley, of the East Brooklyn Congregations, told the New York Daily News. “It’s heart-wrenching as a leader in the community that I’m serving folk who are living with this. I am appalled at some of these conditions.”

However, even if NYCHA is unable to meet the Christmas deadline, it has promised to eliminate the remnants of its backlog of 420,000 repair requests citywide by the end of the year. [NYDN]Christopher Cameron
