Counties in New York and New Jersey see the heftiest property taxes in the United States, according to a new study released by the Tax Policy Center last week. Residents of Westchester County, N.Y., pay on average $9,647 a year in property taxes — the highest in the country, the report shows. Residents of Nassau County, N.Y., and Bergen County, N.J., round out the top three, paying average annual property taxes of $9,080 and $8,893 respectively.

On the other end of the tax totem pole were Alabama and Louisiana, according to the study, which was compiled using data from the American Community Survey. Indeed, of the 24 counties nationwide with average annual property taxes below $250, almost all were in these two states.

Across the country, 60 percent of counties had average annual property taxes of between $500 and $1500, according to the study, seen by CNNMoney. [CNNMoney]  – Hiten Samtani
