A Chelsea CrossFit gym that has irritated neighbors with noisy weights has been operating illegally since opening in August, according to the local community board.

Brick New York, located at 257 West 17th Street, did not apply for a culture establishment permit, a measure required before opening its doors, said Community Board 4. The gym finally applied through the Board of Standards and Appeals on Sept. 6, more than a month after opening, according to records cited by DNAinfo.

Area residents, teaming up with Community Board 4, told DNAinfo they plan to ask the BSA to deny the application unless Brick quiets down. Residents of the building sued the gym last month in an attempt to curb the bothersome slamming of dumbbells and weights, which they allege wakes them up as early as 5:45 a.m. every day.

Neither Brick nor the BSA responded to DNAinfo’s request for comment. [DNAinfo]Julie Strickland
