Cornell shows off renderings for NYC tech campus

Cornell University has unveiled new renderings on its website for its 2.1 million-square-foot technology campus planned for Roosevelt Island.

The designs come from Handel Architects, as well as Morphosis Architects’ Thom Mayne, Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Weiss/Manfredi Architecture. Handel is behind the look of the first residential building, which is developed by the Hudson Companies and the Related Companies. Campus construction is expected to start early next year.

Forest City Ratner, announced in June as the “master developer” for the first phase of work, is developing the first academic building and the corporate co-location building, a property with offices for multiple companies and lodging for tech tenants from the private sector. Morphosis is designing the first academic building. After the campus opens in 2017, it will hold nearly 2,000 full-time graduate students.

The residential building will hold about 350 housing units for students, faculty and staff. Apartments will range from micro-units to three-bedrooms. Amenities are slated to include a roof deck, gym, bike room, lounge and various media rooms. [Curbed] — Mark Maurer
