Michael Stern’s JDS Development and Kevin Maloney’s Property Markets Group have begun construction at the ultra skinny 1,350-foot hotel and condominium tower in Midtown, slated to be the city’s tallest residential tower if all goes as planned.

The 60-foot-wide SHoP Architects-designed structure, slated to rise at 111 West 57th Street (previously reported as 107 West 57th Street), will stand 100 feet taller than the Empire State Building and is partially situated on a landmarked site.

Excavation began this week, the New York Post reported.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the design back in October of last year. The planned tower would be covered with bronze-and-white terra-cotta stripes, as The Real Deal previously reported.

JDS and Property Markets bought the parcel, along with the land lease, 45,000 square feet of air rights and a neighboring property for $131.5 million in March of 2013. [NYP, 3rd item] – Angela Hunt

Upper West Side? Do you know anything about Manhattan? Anything?

432 Park Ave is going to be 1379 ft, which is higher than this building. It’s also going to be finished first. So how will 111 W 57th be the tallest residential building in the city?

    • DanKG

432 Park will be 1398 ft.
111 W. 57 may be taller, or the same general height though, as it’s described as “about 1400 ft” in recent reports. DOB filings are unclear at this point.

The only thing that is unclear is your misdirection. It wont be the highest resi tower in NYC. It will be like lipstick on a pig

No need. The doormen have money for you to borrow if you forget your wallet

And 215 W. 57th St will be a 1,550 ft condo, so they have a ways to go yet.
