Developer seeks to convert reported heroin mill into housing
Cheever Development files plans for Red Hook site
A Brooklyn-based development firm filed permits this week “for zoning review only” that call for a residential building to replace a garage in Red Hook that was allegedly once used as a heroin mill.
Cheever Development is planning to build a three-story structure at 265 Van Brunt Street with 19 apartments, according to plans filed with the Department of Buildings.
In 2011, police officers raided the property, located Between Visitation Place And Verona Street, and found drug processing equipment and $30,000 to $50,000 worth of uncut heroin, New York Yimby reported. The reported discovery in a gentrifying neighborhood didn’t surprise city prosecutors. They said drug dealers have been known to operate in quiet neighborhoods to draw less attention from law enforcement, according to previous reports.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Cheever would raze the garage for its three-story development. According to the application, Oaklander, Coogan & Vitto Architects will design the building. The group is also behind an $11 million development built in 2009 for which occupancy was delayed by the financial crisis until the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development decided to house domestic violence survivors there, as previously reported.
