The excavation of a luxury development in Queens has left the apartment building next door on the verge of collapse due to structural damage, officials said this week.
More than 20 tenants at 94-01 64th Road, located in Rego Park between Wetherole and Booth streets, were evacuated as cracks in the concrete wall adjacent to the construction site continue to grow.
The Department of Buildings issued a stop order last month to Booth Holdings, LLC, the developer of the adjacent vacant lot at 64-24 Booth Street, on the corner of 64th Road, the New York Daily News reported. Despite the temporary shoring columns helping to hold the building up, owner David Kershner of Queens-based Samson Management fears the six-story building won’t be standing for long, according to the paper.
The city reportedly fined the contractor for not taking precautions during construction, but Kershner wants the DOB to compel construction companies working on the project to make repairs to the building.
