New Destiny Housing, a New York City nonprofit that provides housing and survivors to domestic violence survivors, is converting a Bronx affordable rental building into permanent housing for abuse victims.

The nine-story property at 2017 Morris Avenue in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx was completed in 2010, but has never been occupied. Originally intended as an affordable condominium building, the development struggled to find a buyer in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

New Destiny will now convert the site into a combo of domestic violence survivor and affordable rental housing, allotting 19 units for the former and 39 for the latter, DNAinfo reported. One additional unit will go to a live-in super.

“The building contained 11 three-bedroom units, which are extremely unusual in New York City,” Carol Corden, New Destiny’s executive director, told the news site. “So there was the possibility of actually providing housing for slightly larger families.”

An on-site tenant support coordinator will also be included in the project, as well as a recreation specialist to work with children on field trips, tutoring and after-school activities, if funds permit. The facility is slated to open this fall and is expected to be fully occupied by the end of the year. [DNAinfo]Julie Strickland
