Greenpoint waterfront park projects move forward
The city has officially issued requests for proposals for the sites
Plans for two long-awaited parks along Greenpoint’s waterfront are finally moving forward.
Construction on the first of the two parks is now officially set to begin in 2015, financed by the developers of two massive residential projects on the waterfront, according to Crain’s.
On Friday, the city’s Economic Development Corp. issued a request for proposals for a contractor willing to nearly double the size of the one-acre Newtown Barge Park at the start of next year. The city wants development at the 2.5-Acre Box Street Park to begin the following year.
“We’re very glad that these two major, open-space amenities that were committed to back in 2005 are finally moving forward,” said City Councilman Stephen Levin, D-Brooklyn.
The Park Tower Group, which is developing a 5,500-unit Greenpoint Landing project, contributed $5.5 million to the Newtown Barge Park project. Likewise, the Chetrit Group will fund the Box Street Park project by purchasing air rights for roughly $8 million. [Crain’s] – Christopher Cameron
