St. Marks Bookshop inks lease for new East Village space

Store's rent will drop from $20,000 to $6,000 per month

St. Marks Bookshop signed a lease last week on a new East Village space at 136 East Third Street.

The popular but struggling bookshop will leave behind its longtime digs at 31 Third Avenue near Cooper Union, amid rising rents. For months, the bookstore owners pressed for a reduction from its $20,000 monthly rent.

The move is set to occur in the fall. The new location will cost $6,000 per month to rent. St. Marks was close to signing the lease for the new space in March, as previously reported.

“So we’re still going to be one of few Manhattan independent book stores, and the oldest with the original owners,” St. Marks co-owner Bob Constant told the New York Times. “I don’t have any retirement plans. This is my life. I feel pretty good about the fact that we’re still alive.” [NYT]Mark Maurer
