The proposed Jackson Heights-Corona BID expansion will soon be put to a vote. About 1,500 business owners in Jackson Heights will receive ballots at the end of June, giving them the opportunity to weigh in on expanding the business improvement district from 82nd Street to 104th Street.

The 82nd Street Partnership announced the ballot measure a community board meeting, reports Brownstoner. Seth Taylor, executive director of the partnership, said the measure had received adequate support from property and business owners and residents.

The announcement attracted criticism from Marty Kirchman, an activist with Queens Neighborhoods United, who charged the 82nd Street Partnership failed to notify numerous stakeholders of plans to move forward with a vote, according to the Time Ledger. The Department of Small Business Services will determine whether the partnership fulfilled its obligations ahead of the vote.

The BID expansion proposal continues to divide the community. Some see it as a way for chain stores and real estate speculators to displace small business, while others view it as a means of improving safety and attracting more shoppers. [Brownstoner]Tom DiChristopher
