Brookfield hit with noise complaints over Manhattan West work

Community Board 4 has received noise complaints from dozens of residents living near Brookfield Properties’ massive Manhattan West project in Hell’s Kitchen. The neighbors are calling for the developer to pay for the installation of soundproof windows in more than 24 apartments near the site.

They have complained that the construction work between West 31st and 33rd streets, from Ninth to Dyer avenues, runs from 6 a.m. until 2 a.m. or later, DNAinfo reported.

“After-hour variances are issued when the scope of the work necessitates that construction activity continue outside of normal business hours or on weekends,” a spokesperson for the Department of Buildings told DNAinfo.

Brookfield responded to the complaints with a statement. “In order to lessen the impact on the community, we created an enhanced and aggressive sound-mitigation program that includes a sound cocoon system to enclose the exterior scaffolding wall with sound-dampening absorption materials,” said Matthew Cherry of Brookfield, as cited by DNAinfo.
