Barclays Center contractor dispute case can move forward

A judge ruled that a case between a general contractor and a subcontractor related to unforeseen construction costs at Barclays Center may move forward.

General contractor Hunt Construction Group had tried to block the case, arguing that subcontractor the Laquila Group failed to issue written orders for excavation work at the Barclays site, the Brooklyn Eagle reported.  The price of the work in question added up to about $10.9 million dollars following what Laquila called “unexpected complications,” such as flooding and toxic soil disposal.

The two parties verbally agreed to the adjustments to the original work order, and Laquila later documented them in writing, according to the Brooklyn Eagle. Hunt argued that it was not responsible for the costs because the corresponding work was done without a written work order.

The Laquila Group specializes in laying foundations for buildings such as 3 World Trade Center.

Justice Carolyn Demarest rejected that claim, saying Hunt did not provide any documentary evidence to disprove that Laquila has a valid claim, as the Brookln Eagle reported.
