Silverstein Properties is slated to present a proposal before the Department of City Planning tomorrow, to argue why the 106-story Hudson Yards tower project should be zoned for more residential use. Plans call for the 1,100-foot-tall mixed-use building at 520 West 41st Street, near 11th Avenue, to have 1,400 apartments. There would also be 300,000 square feet of retail space; 175 office units and 10,000 square feet in public space. If the building tops out at 106 floors, it will have more stories than any other Manhattan building.
Current zoning only allows for about half of the residential space Silverstein wants, as previously reported. This would be the first public hearing on the matter. The building is expected to be ready by 2020.
“The applicant believes that the proposed zoning text changes to facilitate the residential development at the site are appropriate and necessary as the project site has unique qualities and characteristics that make it more suitable for residential development while at the same time unsuitable for large-scale office development,” according to an environmental study cited by the New York Observer.
