Two Trees launches $10M plan to keep Domino Sugar relics
In addition to famous sign, some rail tracks and syrup tanks being moved to park area
Two Trees Management plans to spend $10 million to salvage industrial artifacts from the Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg.
The $1.5 billion redevelopment of the factory will include the salvaging of the iconic 40-foot sign and other items for the waterfront park component. Two Trees is also saving 425-foot-long rail tracks, bucket elevators and cylindrical tanks that held syrup.
“The demolition contractors wanted to kill me because I kept finding things I wanted to keep,” landscape architect Lisa Switkin of James Corner Field Operations told the New York Daily News.
The City Council approved the plan in May. The development will have a total of 538,000 square feet of affordable apartments and the affordable units will be spread throughout all the buildings on the site, as per an agreement the developer reached with the de Blasio administration.
