NY settles tenant harassment suit with Brooklyn landlord

New York state’s Tenant Protection Unit has reached a settlement with Brooklyn landlord Yeshaya Wasserman, who was accused of harassing tenants and violating their rights.

The settlement calls for Wasserman to conceive of policies to protect tenants from illegal actions. Wasserman will have to hire an independent monitor to review business practices at his properties for nearly three years.

He was accused of not cashing tenants’ rent checks, cutting off heat and hot water and taking tenants to housing court on bogus charges. He owns eight rent-regulated properties with a total of 181 apartments.

The state subpoenaed him in October, as previously reported. Tenants at Homewood Gardens, which includes 651-667 Brooklyn Avenue, 652-668 Brooklyn Avenue and 416-44 Hawthorne Street, filed claims against him at the time.  [NYT] — Mark Maurer
