R.E.M. lead singer sells Soho penthouse for $9.6M

Duplex co-op listed for nearly $11 million in June 2012

It’s the end of the sale — and Michael Stipe feels fine.

The former R.E.M. lead singer has sold his Soho penthouse to an undisclosed buyer for $9.6 million. Stipe first listed the three-bedroom duplex co-op  at 533 Canal Street with Carter Wilcox and Chris Poore of the Corcoran Group for nearly $11 million in June 2012. The sale closed in January, but documents did not show up in city records until today.

Despite going for well below the initial asking price, the sale represents a nice markup. Stipe purchased the pad in 2007 from actor Casey Affleck for $5.75 million during a renovation, the Wall Street Journal previously reported. Affleck himself bought the unit from “Good Will Hunting” director Gus Van Sant in 2000.

Among its amenities are a central atrium, 2,500-square-foot terrace and kitchen designed by Mario Batali.
