Rezoning in East New York could add 7,000 new units
New plans would also allow construction of roughly a million square feet of commercial space
The rezoning of East New York could add 7,250 housing units by the year 2030, according to a new plan released by the city.
The Department of City Planning released new documents about the proposed rezoning, which include an exact outline of the zoning designations. The plans would also allow for the construction of roughly a million square feet of commercial space, according to New York YIMBY.
Without a rezoning, the city expects only 550 new units to be built in the neighborhood between now and 2030, the website reported.
East New York is one of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s six new neighborhoods where developers will be required to build affordable units.
East New York’s rezoning would mostly focus on two neighborhoods: roughly 12 blocks in Ocean Hill, west of Broadway Junction and the main portion of East New York and Cypress Hills to the east, bounded by Sheffield Avenue to the west, Lincoln Avenue to the east, Fulton Street to the north and Pitkin Avenue to the south, according to the website.
