A superseding indictment filed Thursday against former speaker of the New York State Assembly, Sheldon Silver, charged him with making illegal investments through private vehicles.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara claims that Silver made $750,000 through a private investment that was not available to the public, using the money that he obtained through illegal kickbacks, Capital New York reported.
The kickbacks were the basis for his arrest and initial indictment.
The alleged illegal investment was in a firm that provides credit loans to lawyers pursuing class action suits.
Though the investment entities were not named in the indictment, Capital New York reported that the named dollar amounts match with previously revealed transfers to JoRon Management and Counsel Financial. The chairs of Counsel Financial are Perry Weitz and Arthur Luxenberg of Weitz & Luxenberg, the law firm where Silver has served as an “of counsel” attorney for years.
JoRon is managed by Jordan Levy, a known associate of Silver’s. [Capital NY] — Tess Hofmann
