The city submitted plans on Tuesday to build 179 units of affordable housing on a former East Harlem school site, according to a permit application filed with the city’s Department of Buildings Tuesday.

The 12-story property at 413 East 120th Street will include apartments for low-income families, as well as retail space and a community facility, the filing shows. Magnusson Architecture and Planning’s Christine Hunter, the architect of record, said that the project’s developer is the Bronx-based Acacia Network.

The project will be constructed on open space and an annex that was formerly part of a school. The annex, which is currently used as a multi-service centerm will be demolished to make way for the project.

According to Acacia’s website, the project was initially projected to begin in 2013 and be completed by late 2015. Representatives for the developer said on Tuesday that if the project closes in December, construction will take roughly two years.

Plans for the building call for 5,370 square feet of ground-floor retail, more than 164,000 square feet of residential space and a 4,300-square-foot community facility. An exercise and recreation room is planned for the second floor of the building.
