Two injured in 555 West End ceiling collapse
Architect-developer Cary Tamarkin is converting the former school to condos
Two workers were injured when a ceiling partly caved in Monday morning at Cary Tamarkin’s 555 West End Avenue, the former St. Agnes Boys High School on the Upper West Side.
The current condition of the victims is unknown, as is the cause of the collapse. It’s the second major construction accident in the last week in New York City.A total of 65 firefighters responded to the accident, which occurred around 7:20 a.m., an FDNY spokesperson told DNAinfo.
Tamarkin, an architect and developer, bought the building from the Archdiocese of New York in late 2014 for $50 million. He’s converting the landmarked 53,000-square-foot UWS school into an 81,000-square-foot, 17-unit condo building. Tamarkin is also developing a 32-unit, 55,000-square-foot mixed-use project at 550 West 29th Street off the High Line.
