Landmarks to vote on Bedford Historic District next month
Designation would impact 800 buildings in Brooklyn neighborhood
The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission is set to vote on another historic district next month, and it could pose challenges for developers looking to make their mark on Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Landmarks will vote Dec. 8 on the Bedford Historic District, with homeowners within the proposed boundaries – spanning from Bedford to Tompkins avenues and Monroe to Fulton streets – recently receiving letters from the agency.
Around 800 buildings are housed within the suggested area, according to DNAinfo, which includes masonry row houses and apartments constructed between 1870 and 1900. The area features a number of architectural styles and is already home to several landmarked buildings, including Boys High School on Marcy Avenue.
Bedford-Stuyvesant was the most active neighborhood in the city for new residential permit applications in the first quarter of this year, The Real Deal reported in April.
If Landmarks votes in favor of the new Bedford Historic District, the designation would need to go before the City Planning Commission for review and the City Council for a vote. The city approved an expansion of the nearby Stuyvesant Heights Historic District in 2013. [DNAinfo] – Rey Mashayekhi
