Theo Epstein, the architect of the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series run, made a flip to the team’s shortstop.

Cubs star Dansby Swanson and his wife, Chicago Red Stars forward Mallory Swanson, were the buyers behind the late August purchase from Epstein of a six-bedroom mansion in Lakeview for $3.5 million, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Dansby Swanson, hailing from Georgia and formerly with the Atlanta Braves, has become a pivotal player for the Cubs this season. The 29-year-old signed a seven-year, $177 million contract with the team in December, coinciding with the couple’s wedding that same month. Mallory Swanson, at 25, has been with Chicago’s professional women’s soccer team since 2021.

The Lakeview mansion at 3618 North Greenview Avenue, spanning 7,000 square feet, was acquired by the Swansons through a trust. The residence has five full bathrooms, two half-bathrooms, intricate millwork and high ceilings. Notable highlights include a living room with a custom limestone fireplace, a skylight-adorned curved staircase and a gourmet kitchen equipped with a marble island and commercial-grade appliances.

The primary suite features floor-to-ceiling windows, fireplace, dual walk-in closets, wet bar and a lavish marble bathroom featuring separate vanities, a steam shower and a soaking tub. The mansion also offers a great room, an attached four-car garage with a rooftop deck, plus a lower level with, a theater, bar and additional recreational room.

The Lakeview property has a rich sports history, with the Epsteins purchasing it from the builder for $3.25 million in 2011, outbidding former Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Sharp in the process. Sharp eventually acquired another nearby mansion for $2.95 million and sold it in 2021.

Katie Shukis of Compass represented the Swansons in the purchase, while listing agent Jeffrey Lowe, also of Compass, represented the Epsteins. The mansion incurred a $46,000 property tax bill in the 2021 tax year.

Even with their new Windy City acquisition, the Swansons maintain ownership of their five-bedroom, 4,529-square-foot residence on a 1.3-acre lot in Sandy Springs, Georgia, which Dansby Swanson initially purchased before his marriage in November 2020 for $1.63 million, the newspaper reported.

Epstein, now a consultant for Major League Baseball, sold the home months after purchasing a $12 million home in Greenwich, Connecticut.
