Miami-Dade County is looking to revive discussions about a potential light rail system connecting Miami and Miami Beach.
County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Miami Beach transportation director Jose Gonzalez addressed the possibility during a recent Beach Corridor Transit Connection Study committee meeting, the Miami Herald reported. Gimenez and Regalado called for a rail line that runs over the MacArthur Causeway, while Gonzalez declined to commit to a route.
Several local governments and state agencies are funding the $325,000 study, which builds on a 2004 project called Baylink. That study centered on a $483 million light rail system that crossed Biscayne Bay through the causeway.
Another possible route over the Julia Tuttle Causeway is being considered. That route would extend to Miami International Airport. [Miami Herald] — Eric Kalis
