Home starts soar in South Florida

Homebuilding across South Florida boomed in the first quarter of the year, with home starts up 16.6 percent.

Metrostudy, a company that monitors building permits, found 1,659 housing starts in the six-county area from Miami up through Vero Beach. That is up from 1,423 in the fourth quarter of 2013 and 1.3 percent from the first quarter of last year.

Miami-Dade County saw the most home construction starts in the first quarter with 517 — a 22 percent increase from the fourth quarter, but down 12 percent from the same period a year ago, according to the South Florida Business Journal.

Home starts in Broward County were up 65 percent in the first quarter, compared to the fourth quarter, and in Palm Beach County home starts increased by 15.1 percent. [SFBJ]Christopher Cameron
